I’ve been thinking that the older original boards were longer and wider and therefore I would be able to use one of them easier than a new one. I’m 6′4" and weigh 240lbs. Maybe a particular model and make for a new one.

You’re going to need as big as you can get, something this size would be preferable http://www.the-house.com/bchyb2407zz-bic-hybrid.html but a crappier board like http://www.the-house.com/hfmotc6zzhiflymotion.html might be more in your price range… Especially since at your weight you’re going to need a pretty big rig to get planing in a certain amount of weight, that coupled with your weight means you need a HUGE board… Recommend a first rig around 6.5 to learn with and then get bigger as you progress, maybe an 8.5 or so (or if you live in a windless area like myself in San Diego you might need to get up to like 10.8 as I have lol)

Ive been interested in Kite boarding for quite some time now. I talked to some teacher and said that at least 3 lessons are necessary to learn basics but you need more to advance. Are they really necessary or can I do it by myself? I used to Wake board a bit.
About how long does it take to be pretty good/ show-offy

Yeah…
necessary!

You never want to do something potentially dangerous without being well trained on how to do it.

Kiteboarding has its dangers.

The fastest route to the morgue (or at the very least the hospital) is to do a dangerous stunt without good, qualified instruction. Like kiteboarding!
